  • Thread Repair File or Die?
  • Need to fix some threads on the end of a fuel line. I think it's 7/16-24 size and pitch. Which is best to use. Thread file or thread die? The fuel line is still on tractor (Ford 640).

    Thanks,
    Tyler

  • Take the line out, cut the flare and find a new nut.Very easy to strip the fuel filter or tank valve on this job.Get a new nut from NH dealer or napa store. You can buy a new fuel line but the cost is rip off high.A new filter will spoil 30 bucks.

  • 7/16x24 size is right.I could not find that size in a tap or die.You can strip the fuel filter threads if you are not careful.

  • Re: Thread Repair File or Die?
  • There are 2 common 7/16 threads.24 is an odd size.

  • Re: Thread Repair File or Die?
  • I agree. The common ones are 14 and 20, UNC and UNF respectively. The 24 for the fuel line threads is kinda a "bastard" thread.

  • Isn't it a bit dramatic to say file or die...???

  • I'm not understanding your reply?

Sorry I messed up the title. I'll try better next time.

At least I got my question answered by others.

  • It was a joke... like if I don't get the thread repair file, I will die...
obviously, not a very good joke at that...

  • Re: Thread Repair File or Die?
  • Both. If the damage is just in one place, and there is room, use the file to carefully fix the damaged area. Then use the die to finish the job. The problem with just the file is the ability to go all the way around the fitting with nice even strokes at the correct angle. A thread file is a good tool, but requires some finesse. The die is also a good tool, but a little tricky to get started straight if the threads are damaged. Kinda wordy explanation. Used to be a toolmaker in a former life.

  • Good advice Joe. I agree.
You can buy a 3 cornered file at most any Home Depot, hardware store, etc.
It's not hard to do if you take your time.

  • Re: Thread Repair File or Die?
  • Is that the special bolt that screws into the carb holding the ? sediment bowl? I would try a thread chaser gently. If that doesn't work go to the dye. Good luck with it.
