  • The three saws I use the most are all Stihl: MS170, 14" bar; 028 AV Super, 20" bar; MS310, 24" bar. The old 028 is the only "pro" saw in the bunch, the other two are homeowner/rancher type. I like them all but the little 170 gets the most use because we cut a lot of brush and use it for trimming branches after felling trees with the other two. Bought the 028 used, the 310 in 2006, 170 in 2007; had very little trouble with any of them.

  • Stihl are hard to beat for a gas saw. We have one at the river that is over 15 years old and still runs great. It has cut many many locust trees as well...
My newest saw is a Black and Decker 16" electric saw. I run it with my 2000 watt inverter generator so I can take it out in the woods. Works great. No gas to mix no carbs to clean, and the generator runs 10 to 12 hors on a single gallon of gas. The saw cuts as well as any gas saw I have and weighs 1/2 as much. Great for trimming above your head. My only complaint is that the oiler leaks. But that is true for all of my saws except the craftsman electric that I have had over 20 years.
My next saw is going to be the Craftsman 18" electric that comes with an oregon bar an chain and has ca chain break just like a gas saw. Stihl also makes a nice electric saw.

  • The main problem with the stihl one is that it is way too expensive. It costs 5 times all the other electric saws.

  • It depends on how much use it will get. I've had stihl saws (031 and 034) for years. I bought a jonsered 2 years ago (16" bar) and had take it in twice for bar oiling issue and start problems. Cuts ok when I can get running, but not the last time. Also bought a huskvarna in 91 for trimming. Still runs ok. Chain oilers on the Stihl are adjustable, at least my old ones are. Not so on the lower priced saws. Happy shopping!
