I've been using (and abusing) the same Sherman combo since I was 10. It has never been out of the tractor. I'm 74. It works better than I do.
Over time you will figure out what works best for each task. Just remember that it changes the input speed to the transmission which affects the response speed of the hydraulics and affects the PTO rpm. High range is easy to overspeed the pto and low range adversely affects response of hydraulics, especially in draft mode.
The chart that Tim has provided is great. Does your tractor have a gear range disc under the steering wheel nut. If not, they are available. hth
