like bruce said ignition timing the exact point the spark plug fires in relationship to crankshaft rotation is completely different from point gap that you are trying to set even through when the points open this is when the coil discharges its built up voltage and fires the plug your problem is the crankshaft has not turned close enough to top dead center and the plug fires and drives the piston backwards while the starter is still engaged
