Does the "popping" correspond with engine RPM?

If so, you may have a burnt exhaust valve (could be stuck, but much less likely).

Is the power noticeably down?

Do a compression test. A dry test is adequate to identify valve problems.

If you have a single low cylinder and the "popping" corresponds with engine RPM, look for a burnt exhaust valve.
