Yep, something doesn't sound right. Are you sure that was a clump of grass and not a boulder, stump, or Jimmy Hoffa??? Did you check for a hole in the oil pan? Adding 4 quarts of oil seems to me like way too much to add at one time other than at a scheduled oil change. I can see maybe a quart, or two if engine is worn and it uses a lot, but wow, man. If no holes in pan or major leaks, you can try to disconnect the line at the gauge and blow back thru and see if that helps. Next, remove drain plug and see how much oil oozes out. It's gotta go somewhere...
