I finally got it to start and run. Since the push button at the shifter is rusted tight, I couldn't use it so I used jumper cables. I finally realized that the power was being used up by the cables. I removed the start switch and hooked up the battery as it should be and pressing the button by hand. The starter still disengages but the start up now is so fast that at times the engine takes off and runs. Now for a new Bendix.
Amazingly enough, the spark plugs are old and rusted, the plug wires are just as old, points, cap, rotor and coil still work. Impressive.
