Often it's the simple things. Forgive me if this is too simple, but a recent email chain ended up with the guy didn't realize the rotor needed to be pointing at No.1 AFTER the distributor was all the way down. I incorrectly thought that was too obvious to mention. As has already been mentioned, initial timing is 0 degrees. Hope you are doing this inside, with enough heat to get above freezing. I've put wires in cap wrong way around more than once. I don't know why that seems so easy to do. Once the distributor is bolted down, I bump starter to confirm distributor rotation even when I'm sure I know which way it goes. That seems to help me get the plug wires in the right holes.
