My tale of woe was similar. Decided the arms had to come off because the bushings were completely worn out. I used heat, a really big gear puller, and two big hammers to gradually "slide" mine off about 1/1000 of an inch at a time. They didn't actually "slide" until each was more than half way off the splines. If either arm was being replaced for any reason, I'd have cut most of the way thru the hub, and then split it with a cold chisel.
