The gear on the 960 has a solid pin through it that must be driven out. Same for the 8N but the 8N has an additional collar with a pin through it as well. If you have to resort to drilling the pin be very careful not to enlarge the hole as this creates slop in the gear. In rebuilding theses types of distributors you must also make sure the center of the cam and weight assembly is not worn where it rides on the shaft. If this is the case scrap it and buy a new one. The correct cam and weight assembly is not available for sale to my knowledge.
