Ford Ns are plowing fools in 2nd gear, by design. I'm guilty of using the Combo Sherman as a kid. I would use step up 1st where possible.
I've also tangled with ground left unturned for 20 years. Ugh! Step down 1st was a hard pull. Dried clay is too. For that you have to watch the moisture content.
Years ago for plow day we had a kid with a Farmall A single bottom "flying" across the field, passing everyone. But, he was only plowing about 3" deep. That messes up the set for tractors plowing about 7". When he got straightened out, he could not pass anyone.
