Picked this 8n up about 3 years ago. Non runner. Couldn't get it to run right or idle. Rebuilt carb, even cbanged to a diff carb before rebuilding the tsx 251(?). No change, so pulled dist. Plum wore out, shaft badly corroded, weight slots badly grooved. Had a siezed up dist in some parts, started cleaning it up to see what I have. Turns out it is a rather good dist. Swapped breaker plates. Some improvement but still no idle or smooth acceleration. Decided to swap back to the tsx 33 carb. Fired it up and get it all nicely tuned. Idles at 400 rpm accelerates like a pro!!! I am ecstatic!!! To say the least!!! Patted myself on the back and said hook up air tube and move on to other projects. Did that and wanted to hear it do it's sweet thing again... WTF!!! Runs like crap again!!!! Air filter!!!?? Really??!!! Give me a break!!! Remove air tube, runs great!!! So todays project is to clean up air can. I believe I have a new mesh element.
All the while I have had to keep the 8n some what useable, snow removal, cleaning horse shed, spraying, fire wood... the list goes on...
Have been addicted to these n's since '85 when we picked up "Tor", '44 2N for moving firewood and clearing roads and trails. And as of now I have 2 8ns, '48 & '50. 48 is now a parts rig. Tor is in process of rebuild and new clothes.
Sorry this got so long. But thank you to every body for the input and suggestions.
And as my mom told my wife at the time about my dad and I "life is good now, the boys have a tractor!!! Rusty
