HiYa Mike-
What doesn't look right? ALL 9N and 2N tractor serial numbers have a '9N' prefix, ALL 8N tractors have an '8N' prefix. Serial numbers have star(*) symbol before and after the serial number until mid-1951,then switched to a diamond(<>) symbol. The Star was to designate steel cylinder liners used, the diamond was to designate cast iron cylinder liners used. This engine block serialization was used on all Ford vehicles, not just tractors. Beginning in 1931 Ford changed their hand stamps to use a lower case letter 'b' for the numeral '6' and the inverse for the numeral '9'. The numeral '1' was also changed to use a capital letter 'I'. Casting date codes do not follow this method. You should have a casting date code on the starter pocket as that is all part of the engine block casting. Casting date codes defined as: 1st = letter from A-L, denotes month, A=JAN, B=FEB, etc. 2nd = Numeral, 1-31, denotes day of month. 3rd = single digit for year, for example, 7 =1947. Casting date code tags were put on the block the day they were cast. Here’s a LINK to John Smith’s archived page on Tractor ID/History. Hope this helps.
