The big reason these steering boxes wear out besides the obvious of years of use, is that owners neglected to keep them lubed. Owner manuals show how to pour oil down the column after removing the acorn nut. The problem with this is after the seals and gaskets wear out the oil will only leak out all over. I don't think you will be able to get away with a cheap fix. Doing all the work yourself will save some money on labor costs so it's only your time and efforts involved then. Sometimes the Zerk/plug/bolt helps by adding cornhead grease or oil, but really is only a temporary fix. My early 8N has needed a steering box rebuild for years, but due to costs, has dropped way down on the priority list.
