I believe the pipe plug under the differential is a standard NPT (National Pipe Taper) fitting. NPT fittings should have thread sealant. The fuel elbow that goes in the carb and the fuel valve to fuel tank are NPTF (National Pipe Taper Fuel) connections. These are actually Dryseal fittings that are not supposed to need any thread sealant. On these tractors, I still use thread sealant on Dryseal threads because they have been taken apart so many times they need all the help they can get.

I use the yellow tape packaged on a plastic roll just like the teflon stuff for water pipes. The tape works best for me since there are no issues with contamination or shelf life.
