I wouldn't trust the temp gauge on a BBQ grille to tell me anything other than "it's hot". If a BBQ grille is able to get the ring gear to 650, that should have been enough. I laid my ring gear on a bed of coals in the wood stove, and closed the door. Flywheel was on the floor in front of the stove. Grabbed the ring gear with two pairs of channel lock pliers, and it dropped right on.
