Yep, hit the nail, Thanks! Once you provided the name, it was easy to find in the parts book (with the clutch parts). Seems like I should have remembered taking that out when I removed the flywheel. I'm baffled why they decided a retainer was necessary. Maybe this was an assembly plant issue, where some pilot bearings got knocked out and lost before the transmission was attached to the engine. Once the tranny pilot shaft goes into the pilot bearing, there is absolutely no way that bearing can go anywhere.
