It is impossible to do proper engine work without a service manual. The manual will have specifications that you compare to measurements taken as described in the manual. If you need main bearings the crank probably needs to be turned. If the crank is badly scored or has already been turned you might need a new crank. Rod bearings/journals may be in worse shape than mains. If you don't have a manual and the tools to do engine work, it's best to have an engine shop do the work right the first time.
