I also have a late (NOV) 1939 Ford-Ferguson, s/n *9N-653I*. Yesterday I checked the covers and both are aluminum. I'm not sure if they were switched or not. My uncles have since passed away and my grandfather died the year before I was born so there's no one to ask anymore. I inherited the 9N in 1997. It does have a later 2N aluminum governor with the oil line. I do not know if the covers matter which governor is used or not.

I also checked my early 8N, built in October, 1947, casting date code "I167" s/n *8N-I55I3* and both covers are cast iron.
