NO, you do not remove all the front end stuff, i.e. hood, doglegs, radiator, et al in order to loosen the fan belt. A 1940 9N would have the 1-wire/3-Brush 9N-10000-B generator. This was a small barrel, had the 3rd Brush adjustment slider button on the back panel. Many have been changed to either the larger 9N-10000-C unit or the 2N -10000 unit, each visually and mechanically the same. Itís the belt tensioner that makes it a C or 2N unit. 2N unit came with it standard, C used an optional kit. The first two early 9N generators had small barrels and NO belt tensioner device. The LINK below will take you to the 1943 Service Manual for free download as are all in the Manuals and How-To's forums. When the new belt is installed, proper tension is achieved when there is a 1/2" deflection on belt. This manual shows 1" but all other manuals show 1/2" and I've always used that as the proper criteria.

BELT REMOVAL: You loosen the pivot/mounting bolt and if it has the belt tensioning device, loosen it first. Leave in place and gently push it forward towards the radiator hose. That will slacken the belt. Now work the belt off the generator pulley. Next, work the belt off the water pump pulley and grasp the top of belt and push downward so it slips off the crank pulley. Now you simply snake the belt up over the fan blade and off. Installation is just in reverse order; you have to snake the belt over the fan blade first. Do you have any of the essential manuals? If not then here's one from our library of MANUALS that should be in every N-Owners shop. If you have a 12V switch over job then same thing -loosen alternator first and proceed in same way.
