I am use to engine cylinders in which you don't want a smooth polish finish. We always cut the ridge off the top if there was much of one, then hone the cylinder with a cross-hatch pattern. My BIL may have been thinking along the same lines as his work is restoring muscle cars. I wish my friend was still around; he was well trained in all this stuff.
