Tim-
A good rule to keep in mind is don't just start replacing parts without first performing a true root cause problem solving method to determine if the part is defective or not. Start with the electrical system first with the battery. It must sustain a full charge under load to be effective. That doesn't mean simply connecting a battery charger to it. It needs to meet specific gravity and your local starter shop and/or auto parts store can test it properly. Next is to verify all the wiring, the generator, the VR, the distributor are all correct. You still need to tell us if it is an early 8N with a front mount distributor or a later model with the angle (side) mount unit. Front mount timing is set on your workbench or kitchen table by adjusting the points according to setting procedure outlined in the Operator's Manual and I&T FO-4 Manual. Side mount timing is also spelled out in the manuals as well, but procedure is different. The fuel system is next. How did you 'clean carb'? Did you remove it, disassemble it, and rebuild it? How did you 'adjust timing'? If it has the front mount distributor, is the OEM Ballast Resistor in the circuit? Firing order is 1, 2, 4, 3
