That seems to describe a battery that has reached end-of-life and may have killed the starter on it's way down. There are a lot of variables that could cause it to crank slow when running the starter with jumper cables. Length and size of cables is just one of them. I'd have the battery checked and plan on buying a new one. If it still won't crank well, have the starter checked. If it's a long drive to town, pull the starter and make one trip.
