In 1984 I had to run a trench for a city water supply 400 feet to my new house. I tried a trencher in hard clay. After an hour and going about 2 feet, I inquired about a backhoe. Ouch, $400 for the week-end.
We had some fun. Each of my kids got to try their hand at the controls. At the time they were 18, 16 and 14. We spent the best part of Saturday and Sunday but got it done.
I saw the contractor that set my septic tanks and layed the field. I asked him how much he would have charged and how long would it take. Believe it or not he said, $400 and about 4 hours.
But, we had fun.
