Here are a few facts that relate to Ford tractor transmissions of that era.
If you look through the I&T FO-20 manual which covers 1955-1964 models
the procedure for adjusting and overhauling a 4 speed transmission, including a single clutch, is about 6 pages long.
Likewise, the procedure for a 5 speed with dual clutch is just over 7 pages long.
The procedure for adjusting and overhauling a Select O Speed of that era is Thirty Five pages pages long.
Those are facts.
Here are a few of my opinions/thoughts on Select O Speeds:
I have one in a 1966 3 cylinder Ford 4000.
It worked perfectly and had no issues.
But for numerous reasons, I hated the transmission and will never own another one.
Recently, I decided to replace it with an 8 speed. I have it out and have advertised it on 4 tractor forums - including this one, 3 places on Facebook and about 5 different cities on Craigslist.
Not ONE inquiry after 3 weeks.
Just yesterday I gave it to my best friend for free. I just want it gone and don't want another one.
