1948 was the year engine block was cast. You can further ID it by the casting date code on a boss tag attached to the starter pocket when cast. That would be specific to the date cast, NOT the date the tractor was built. For that add roughly 30 days. For example 'B248' would be February 2, 1948. Realize serial numbers don't mean a whole lot though. Engines were often swapped out. You might have the s/n *8N-12214* engine replaced in a 9N or 2N tractor. Other defining factors need to be looked at. 1948 8N criteria would be: 4 Speed Transmission; Position Control: early steering box; no script fenders; front mount distributor; and a 6V 3-wire/3-brush generator on RH side; to name most. The aluminum hydraulic pump cover will have a date code as well.
