It's hard to say how much play is too much without seeing it, but if it wasn't leaking fluid into the clutch area it's probably ok. Pull the input shaft and stick a new seal in there. The front end of the shaft is supported by a bushing in the flywheel. While the shaft is out, test fit the end and see if that bushing allows the end of the shaft to wobble. If it's loose I just pack the bushing with grease and use the input shaft as a driver to push the bushing out. Place the end in the bushing and shack the gear end with a rubber mallet. The grease has nowhere to go except to push the bushing out. Clean out the grease and use the shaft as a driver to gently seat the new bushing.
