"Kerosene stinks and is expensive."

Same is true for unvented LP. If I couldn't stand the noise of the torpedo heater I'd go this route:

Small Garage Unit Heater

I have a much larger (250K) LP fired unit heater in my 3000 SF fully insulated shop and it works wonderfully in the coldest weather. But it is thirsty and even at bulk rate it is expensive to feed. So much so that I shut it down at night and in order to conserve propane I use a 200K BTU kerosene torpedo heater along with the LP unit to get it back up to temp in the AM. With both of them running I can do that in 20-30 minutes. If I only used the LP it would run non-stop for hours and I would be burning 500+ gallons of LP a month....
