Why a "new coil"?
Front mount conversions are picky about matching the correct coil with the factory or an add-on resistor. The new coil has to be the exact same type as the old one, unless you check and make sure the resistor(s) are correct for the coil you are using.
Every time the points are replaced, everything inside the distributor has to be checked and verified functional. Make sure there are no loose wires or copper strip that has been broken or bent and going to ground in there. Turn the distributor and make sure you can see the points open and close both visually and with a test light or ohmmeter.
Check points open and points closed voltage at the top of the coil as Bruce suggested. Give us those values and we can give more detailed advice.
