Go for it. You can get the adhesive sandpaper like material just about anywhere that sells automotive supplies. Slipping on a running board from ice, rain, or snow is a definite ow-ey! I have used plain old sand on my working 8N. Take a handful of sand and sprinkle it over the running board then spray some paint over it and let dry, and you have a cheap, quick, farmerized version! It will wear off eventually.
