"He said the aux shifter popped into 3 distinct positions". Yes, a 2 speed will do that. Standard range, neutral, 2nd range. Notice that I did not say high or low. It could be either.
A Sherman combination aux tranny will have 4 positions. In the neutral position, the handle will slide in toward the trans. case or out depending where it starts. This allows 3 speed ranges. Out and back toward the driver is "standard" range. It is the same as if the aux did not exist.
Forward to neutral, in toward the case and forward again is low range. Forward to neutral, in toward the case and back to you is high range.
The shift levers for a hi-lo and a combo tranny are different. The hi-lo has a straight handle coming off the shaft and back toward you with a ball top. The combo tranny has a "dog-leg" handle that corves forward and then comes back toward you.
