I grew up on one of these 5 speeds in a 63 Ford 4000. Slick as a whistle and very dependable. I always thought about it like a 3 layer cake with a up and down slot in the middle. Top layer is R + 3 , middle layer is 1 + 2, bottom layer is 4+5. Pretty simple. Middle slot up and down is neutral. If yours is working ok you should figure it out and get used to it in no time.
