I'd hold off splitting the tractor. It sounds like you have a wiring issue. Are you set up with the OEM 6V/POS GRN circuit or did you do a 12V switch out job? You can find original wiring diagrams in your Essential Manuals and in our HOW-TO's forum -SEE LINK. If you don't have them, I highly suggest you get them. Try this: Disconnect the battery cables. Disconnect any lights to power. Get a wiring diagram and a copy of JMOR's Wiring Pictograms and scroll down to your set-up. Verify yours is wired correctly no matter if 6V or 12V. Did you motor test the starter? A shop can bench test too and if defective then can be rebuilt (fist choice) and leave the China made stuff in their own country. Just buying new parts and replacing without true root cause test is no way to problem solve. Wiring on a 6V includes the Ballast Resistor, 1-Wire generator (after s/n 12500), 1-Wire starter motor, cutout, push-button safety starter, ammeter, and ignition switch. On a 12V job, remove generator and cutout, install an alternator with 12V cables, belt tensioner, and keep ammeter or change out to a Volt Gauge.
