Does your generator have the belt tension arm? Do you have lights connected? What does AMMETER show when lights are ON? Early 8N generator had a 3rd brush and adjusting screw was on back panel. Did that get messed with? Try setting to LO with your screwdriver. We'll get back to all that. S/N 233XXX would be a 1949 block with the front mount distributor. Good advice already given. I'll add that just because your battery is 6V don't assume it is wired correctly for the OEM 6V/POS GRN system. Also, don't assume it was wired correctly in the first place before you put all new parts in. Going by old setup is a good idea but don't assume it was correct. Any reason why you did that before testing them? How did it act prior to all that? The generator, starter, and distributor all were designed to be rebuilt over and over. Do you have the OEM Essential Manuals to reference and a copy of JMOR's Wiring Pictograms? See LINK from our HOW-TO's forum below. Is your AMMETER the OEM INDUCTION/LOOP 30-30 Style or an aftermarket two-screw terminal type? If so, when running engine, click on light switch. What does the AMMEWTER show then? As stated, get the battery tested -starter shop or parts store can do that. If good, have it charged fully. If it tests bad, now you can get a new good, brand one. Also, good or bad, do you have the generator belt tension bracket attached? This is a common error when installing an 8N generator- forgetting the 8N 10145 Tension Arm. Belt tension MUST be held in order to charge the battery correctly. The 8N front mount unit uses a 3-Wire Starter Motor with the Solenoid; a 3-Wire/3-Brush 11.5 AMP Output, 'A' Circuit Design with Generator & Belt Tension Arm, p/n 8N-10145; Ignition Switch, AMP Gauge; Start Pushbutton Neutral Safety Switch; and all wired correctly. Did you polarize the generator? Probably not the problem but won't ever hurt anything. Get your manuals and the PICTOGRAMs and use as your guide. Get battery tested. With power source disconnected, lights switch disconnected, go thru the entire wiring system using your VOM set to Continuity, not a test light, and verify the wiring. Don't just go by wiring color codes either. Colors don't conduct electrons. Wiring harnesses vary from the cheap vinyl covered type to exact-as-original new ones and only 2 or 3 suppliers of these exist. Dennis Carpenter and AGRI-SERVICES are the best. Go slow, be methodical, and donít skip steps.
