I agree with others, a 5' cutter seems right for the 8N in most cases. The best thing I ever did for my 5' cutter is a set of limiter chains aka: "mower height stabilizer kit". Once the chains were installed, the cutting height is always right. The next best thing happened when I replaced the blades and stump jumper. The new blades are 4" x 1/2" rather than the original 3" x 1/2". That's a lot more rotating energy to power thru brush. The new blades came with a much sharper cutting edge than usual and they are "lift type" blades. The back edges of the blades are bent to help lift grass and weeds for a more uniform cut. The true test came when my lawn tractor died a few weeks ago. After 10 seasons the Briggs decided it was done. The brush cutter did a decent job keeping the grass from getting completely out of control while we shopped for a new lawnmower.
