Larry-
I concur with what JMOR said - apply the "if it ain't broke" mantra. If you've had no oil pressure issues I'd hold off on the pickup tube fix until it's time to do a complete tear down and engine overhaul. As stated, the Essential Manuals have the procedures, no reason to make your own guesses. There are a lot of steps to remove the oil pan and it's all outlined. My advice would be to pull the entire motor in prep for total rebuild, get it on an engine stand, then you can rotate it around so the pan is on top, then more easily can be removed. The pan is cast iron and heavy. If you drop it on your concrete floor, chances are you will crack it. Get help.
