Success! Cranked a few more turns on the puller and heated the bejeezus out of the hub: kept at it until the axle nut and washer were glowing and eventually it popped loose. This was not a job for your Bernz-O-Matic torch.

BTW- Read and observe the caution in the "how to": loosen the axle nut but do not remove it from the axle. When the hub does let go it comes off with whatever force the puller has applied, i.e. lots.
