After a full tune up and a couple of days trying to get the tractor to run smooth, I believe I have an intermittent coil issue. I got the engine running smooth this morning for a couple of minutes, then it sputtered, spit, etc and died. I immediately checked for power between the coil and the distributor on the low intensity circuit and it was dead. A check prior to the start up had power.
So now my basic question is what coil do I need? I have limited knowledge of electrical circuitry, so here are some data points that may help a knowledgeable person:
1)Tractor has a 12V battery
2)Between the switch and the coil there is a resistor. I measured 1.5 OHMS. I do not know what that resistor is for, but answer may be in next point.
3)I have a 12V, can coil. It has been painted over but 2 items left visible. 12 Volt and Use with External Resistor Only. The coil has marked plus and minus posts and a high intensity plug.
So is this a NORMAL 12v coil that i can go to NAPA, etc and pick up or is there something else i need to know to get the right coil.
