The jig provides a constant reference point for measuring the adjustments. The I&T manual has the measurements, but those measurements to not consider wear. If you set point A 1 inch from point B, you have no fixed reference point for point A or B w/o a jig . Even though you can easily adjust A 1 inch from B, wear in both A and B can alter the operation of the lift.

If I tell you to set both chairs 1 foot apart in the exact center of the room, you need to know how far apart the walls are.
