On the 8N the PTO shaft can be removed but since it also turns the hydraulic pump, the 3-point lift will not operate. Sounds like the original 1-1/8" PTO has been replaced by the newer standard size 1-3/8", which is longer. You will need a new longer aftermarket cap as shown in the link that Tim posted.
