I will offer a WAG. I don't know "what they are for" but if I would guess based on appearance I would say they are guides for the lateral movement of the scotch yokes. I have never had one of these pumps apart but AFAIK they are not used on the Fords - possibly used on Fergusons. I don't think they will hurt a thing and would leave them alone.
