Installing the later tachometer depends on the vintage of governor you have. The ones for the governor have a threaded boss on the back end for the governor cable. Generally replacement governors have this boss with a screw cap over it.
For temporarily measuring rpm you could use a automotive test meter or small engine rpm meter that picks up a signal from one spark plug wire.
