Explain your system, is it 6V/POS GRN or a 12V/NEG GRN switch out job? There is only one starter button - the neutral safety pushbutton by the shifter. The top of the starter motor has the SOLENOID, a relay. Burnt wires have a distinctive smell and should be a huge clue something is wrong and should shut down the system at once. Mucked up wiring would be a likely cause so get out your Essential Manuals, disconnect battery and lighting circuit, verify entire wiring with a VOM set to Continuity. Take no shortcuts.
