Anytime you replace a main bearing cap align boring or honing is necessary. The manfacturing process used by the factory makes that a hard and fast rule, The factory assembles the roughly machined caps and block and then bores them as a unit. That makes them a uniquely matched set that cannot be duplicated in a replacement part new or otherwise.
