If the grooves on our hub are worn from running loose it could bind when you tighten the nut. It could be both the hub and the axle are worn. Usually it's just the hub because the axle is a lot harder. If that is the problem, the book says you need a new hub. However, you could use the low-tech, inexpensive repair method and cut some shims from an aluminum can to fit in the grooves. I think Zane was the first one to suggest this method of repair.
