Diode junction develop that forward voltage drop in a slightly different way that a resistive element does.. thus there is very little power disipation. You can make a constant current voltage regulator for small applications with a fixed supply, and a handfull of diodes, using the forward voltage drop as a cut-down factor.. and again.. it's not really a power disipation issue, past the actuall current the devices are passing.. etc.
