air cleaners

I looked at both of my air cleaners. The cleaner on my 46 2n is the c-2 type, round bottomed cup with clamp, "U" embossed on front. Dad said it was never replaced and if it was we'd most likely have the old air cleaner. Even junk parts on our farm are saved "because we may need it." He owned it from 1964 when he took over the farm to when he gave it to me around 2000. Picture from 1960-1964 confirms air cleaner on tractor at least at that time. Grandfather purchased the tractor in brand new condition around 1953. Dad has an excellent memory especially when it comes to antique automotive related stuff, but you can take his recollections with a grain of salt if youd like.

My other cleaner is off from an unknown year tractor. Same as above with "U" embossed. No evidence on either assmbly of their ever being the "9n-9600-d" spring type clamps on them

Both round bottomed cups are perfect fits for assembly, no slop and no forcing them on.

The domed top from the 9n-9600-D assembly does not fit correctly onto the "c-2" assemblies. It is a larger diameter and does not sit into the top of the assembly like the flat topped ones do.

Pictures of 1940 9n upon delivery when new show flat bottomed air cleaner with clamp. Would have to look very close at pictures to see if it has the different air cleaner tube. My grandfather purchased this tractor new in 1940 in Lake Placid, NY. Pictures have written on them, "New Tractor" "1940". For positive identification purposes it had hinged battery door. I sold Dave Mckane the snap-in safety cover from this tractor. Had smooth hubs, aluminum grille, four-spoke stearing wheel, aluminum dash. Dad sold tractor in 1980.
I took pictures but forgot my camera at the parents, time did not allow me to scan photos of 1940 9n. Will post when time allows.

hope this helps, Jonas
