Re-building Steering Box

Ford Model 8n sn 8N276492, 1950 w/ side mount distributor, converted to 12V

Hi All,
How difficult and how much time is associated with rebuilding this steering box? I know this is kinda like asking "how long is a string?", to qualify the question, I would say I am fairly competent at most all repairs. What should I look for as potential problems and possible parts to purchase before I jump into this? Presently, when I turn the wheel, it rises turning left, and lowers when turning right. It is extremely hard to steer. What could be this problem?
