  • Found a 14-1 Sickle Mower
  • I saw 3 Ford tractors in a driveway and off to the side of the house, several implements. One being a 14-1 sickle mower. I haven't accessed it enough to see if it's all there.

But was wondering what the consensus was on the forum on the 14-1 versus the 501 that I currently own. How well will it work on a 2N or a 8N?

    Thanks.

  • The 14-1 mower was introduced in 1947 so it was intended for the 8N and its predecessors. The 501 was introduced a little later and is an improved mower in my opinion. I would opt for it over the 14-1 and I think parts are easier to find for it.

  • Thanks, Ed. The only reason why I was thinking about the 14-1 was it looks to be a lot lighter to handle, and the 501 doesn't fit my 2N since the lift arms on my 2N doesn't allow the stablizer bar guides to be attached to the lift arms.

But, the 501 seems to be more sturdier, and the 14-1 looks to have a lot of parts to it. It might fit my 2N better though.

The guy (91 years old) has a late model 8N, a 801 (not sure exactly what model 801), and a 641, plus a couple of Farmalls. And a lot of implements, both 3 point, drag type, etc., some too big for a Ford N series.

  • One drawback to the 14-1 will be finding parts for it. I've heard from other owners about having to find a 2nd one to cannibalize for parts. I think parts for the 501 are pretty available.

Get that 801 and the 501 and you will be a happy mower.

  • Yes, that 801 would be nice. Even though I think it's for sale, his wife told me he still uses that one, with a boom pole, to move things around. Of the 3, it appeared to be in the best condition.

The 641 Workmaster would be nice also. Having live hydraulics would be a great improvement over my 2N and my 8N.

I seen youtube videos of the 501 mounted on a 2N, but mine has different looking lift arms which hinder the mounting of the mower onto the tractor.

  • Can you post a picture of your lift arms? If not, you are welcome to email them to me and I'll post them here for you.

  • Here are the lift arms on my 2N.

Hopefully this works, it's been a while since I posted an image here.

  • Not sure why your photo is not displaying but I went to your IMGR site and looked at it. What is preventing you from attaching the 501 to it?

  • Though it's possible I'm hooking it up wrong, but the area where the lift rods attach to the lift arms is also where the mower's stabilizer arms and guide needs to be on the lift arm. I may have to rock the lower part of the mower back some to allow the guide to hook to the lift arm. I don't know. I'll have to experiment more with it.

  • Are you following the owner's manual instructions for attaching it? If you haven't seen them, we have both the owner's manual and dealer parts book for the 501 here in our Manuals/Mowers library.

  • I downloaded every piece of literature on the 501 from this site (OM and PC). The OM here isn't a high quality, but it is readable enough to use.

I also viewed several Youtube videos on the 501, and study them to see how they were attached, and watched a couple of videos that show them being attached. All very helpful, though one of them removed the mower's supplied toplink and used his own.
