  • Parts are cleaned, new parts added, ready to reinstall in my '49 8N. Before I do may I ask:

    1) Is there any advantage to flushing out the transmission cavity with the leftover Diesel oil that the pump soaked in?
    2) The pump had a thicker gasket than the one I got from my supplier, which is quite thin. I can make a thicker one out of gasket material; is that a good idea?
    3) Does anything go on the gasket before install? I know better than to use sealer; anything else?

  • No sealant needed on the gasket, don't recall how thick my gasket was ( I know it wasn't paper thin.
    I did wash down the inside of the tranny and cleaned it out , I mixed gunk sc with diesel according to directions on the jug then rinsed it out with clean straight diesel.
    Drip dry overnight and assembled next day, used my motorcycle jack to carefully reinstall.
    Ether TOH or Hobo had some great tips that are not in the manual (maybe on YT site).
    Tip the front up a bit (that goes up and in first ) I put two front bolts in to hold it in place and align the gasket, then lifted the rear up and put in two bolts there as well.
    It went very slick no issues and no leaks... This on my 49 8n.
    Leave the bolts a tad loose and reinstall pto shaft, finger tight on the bolts on the pump and rotate the pto shaft a few times to line everything up then tighten the bolts on the pump and rotate pto shaft again to be sure everything is ok...
